Delhi CM Atishi announced a substantial increase in minimum wage for unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled laborers in unorganized sector.

The revised rates, effective from October 1, 2024, are set to be the highest in the country.

Revised Minimum Wage Rates

Unskilled Workers – Rs 18,066: Unskilled laborers, who often perform physically demanding tasks, will now receive a minimum wage of Rs 18,066 per month.

This represents a significant boost from the previous rate and reflects the Delhi government’s commitment to uplifting vulnerable sections of society.

Semi-Skilled Workers – Rs 19,929: Semi-skilled workers, who possess some specialized skills but not formal qualifications, will benefit from a minimum wage of Rs 19,929. This increase acknowledges their essential contributions to various industries.

Skilled Workers: Rs 21,917: Skilled workers, including those with specific training or certifications, will now earn a minimum wage of Rs 21,917. This recognizes their expertise and ensures fair compensation for their labor.

Context and Critique

Atishi did not shy away from political commentary during her press conference. She accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being “anti-poor”.

Atishi highlighted the stark contrast between Delhi’s wage standards and those in BJP-ruled states. According to her, wages in Delhi are perhaps double what workers receive in those states.

Before the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in 2013, the minimum wage landscape in Delhi was grim. Unskilled workers received a mere Rs 7,722, semi-skilled workers earned Rs 8,528, and skilled workers were paid Rs 9,388.

The AAP-led government’s consistent efforts have led to this remarkable improvement in minimum wages.

Conclusion

The Delhi government’s decision to enhance minimum wages is a step toward social justice and economic empowerment. While critics may dismiss it as an election gimmick, the impact on the lives of countless workers cannot be overstated.

As the revised rates take effect, daily wage earners in Delhi can look forward to a more dignified existence.
