Air India has successfully reduced the average age of its staff from 54 to 35 years, marking a significant transformation within the company.

This change is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the airline and align it with modern industry standards.

Air India: Hiring and Transformation

Over the past two years, Air India has hired around 9,000 new employees, contributing to the substantial reduction in the average age of its workforce.

The addition of younger employees has brought fresh perspectives and energy to the company, enhancing its overall efficiency and service quality.

The average age of Air India’s cabin crew has also seen a notable decrease, now standing at 28 years.

This younger crew is better equipped to handle the dynamic and demanding nature of the aviation industry, ensuring a more vibrant and engaging experience for passengers.

Merger and Integration

Air India’s transformation includes the successful merger of four airlines—Vistara, Air India Express, AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India), and the original Air India—under a unified banner.

This integration has been a complex process, requiring the harmonization of operating procedures and training of staff across the different airlines.

Despite the challenges, the company has managed to create a cohesive and efficient workforce.

As a result of these changes, Air India now commands a 29% share of India’s domestic market, up from single digits at the time of privatisation.

The airline operates 300 aircraft, employs 30,000 staff, and conducts 1,200 daily flights, underscoring its significant growth and market presence.

Looking ahead, the airline has placed an order for 470 new aircraft and invested $200 million in infrastructure, further solidifying its commitment to growth and modernization.

The airline’s five-year transformation plan aims to continue improving service standards, expanding its fleet, and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
