Foxconn, the Taiwanese contract manufacturer known for assembling iPhones, has completed its $230 million project to build dormitories for workers at its Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu.

This initiative aims to provide enhanced accommodation for its predominantly female workforce, improving their quality of life and operational efficiency.

Foxconn Project Overview

The dormitory complex, spread over 20 acres, includes six residential blocks, each ten stories tall, with a capacity of 18,000 beds.

Additionally, two blocks are dedicated to utilities, ensuring that the facility can cater to the needs of its large workforce.

The project was initiated in response to a food poisoning incident in 2021, which led to worker protests and the temporary closure of Foxconn’s plant.

The new dormitories offer a range of amenities to the workers.

These include recreational spaces for cricket, badminton, basketball, and volleyball.

Additionally, there is a canteen providing subsidized meals and a small grocery store for everyday needs.

The proximity of the dormitories to the factory means that workers no longer need to commute daily, enhancing their convenience and safety.

Government Support and Future Plans

In August 2024, the Tamil Nadu government inaugurated an industrial housing project to accommodate 18,720 women employees of Foxconn.

The cost of building this facility in Vallam Vadagal near Sriperumbudur was Rs 706 crore. It marks the beginning of Foxconn’s dorm-style model in India.

The company’s investment in worker housing reflects its successful township model implemented in countries like China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Experts believe that developing robust social infrastructure, including housing, healthcare, and transportation, is essential.

These elements are crucial for attracting and retaining a skilled workforce.

Dhruv Shekhar, senior associate at Koan Advisory Group, emphasized the importance of setting up worker housing, healthcare facilities, and transportation systems.

He noted that these elements are crucial to supporting long-term growth and operational efficiency.
