Infosys Layoffs Spark Government Complaint by NITES

Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has lodged a formal complaint with the Indian government over the mass layoffs at Infosys, calling the terminations illegal, unethical, and a violation of labor laws.

Infosys, one of India’s leading IT companies, recently laid off around 700 campus recruits who were onboarded last October after a delay of two years.

The layoffs have sparked significant controversy and backlash from both employees and the public.

NITES Complaint against Infosys

NITES, a registered association working for the rights and welfare of IT professionals, has accused Infosys of disregarding established labor laws.

The organization claims that Infosys did not follow due process before terminating the trainees.

Harpreet Singh Saluja, lawyer and president at NITES, wrote a letter to Mansukh Mandaviya, the MoLE.

He stated that Infosys resorted to forcibly terminating recently onboarded campus recruits.

According to NITES, Infosys employed coercive tactics, including the presence of bouncers and security personnel, to ensure compliance with the company’s unilateral decision.

At the Mysore campus, Infosys confined the affected employees to meeting rooms and subjected them to intimidation tactics.

Company’s Response and Demands by NITES

Infosys has defended its actions, stating that the layoffs were part of a mutual separation process.

The company explained that the employees failed to clear three attempts in an internal assessment program after undergoing extensive foundational training at the Mysuru campus.

The company claimed that less than 350 people were among those who failed to qualify.

NITES has demanded strict penal action from the ministry for violating provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

The association demands an immediate investigation and a restraining order against Infosys to halt further terminations until due legal process is followed.

Additionally, NITES has demanded the reinstatement of all terminated employees along with appropriate compensation for the wrongful termination.

The layoffs have placed the affected employees under immense distress and financial hardship.

Many of the employees, who resided across the country, struggled to manage their evening stay or arrange travel back home.

NITES has stated that Infosys’s actions set a dangerous precedent for the IT industry and, if left unaddressed, will embolden other corporations to engage in similar exploitative and unlawful practices.
