PM Internship Scheme, launched in October 2024, has gained significant traction, with Tamil Nadu emerging as the top-performing state in offering internship opportunities.

The scheme, designed to provide structured on-the-job training to young professionals, has seen strong industry participation, particularly from industrially developed and urbanized states.

Tamil Nadu’s Leadership in Internship Opportunities Under PM Internship Scheme

According to data from the PM Internship website, as of May 15, 2025, Tamil Nadu accounts for 13.25% of total internship opportunities, offering 15,785 positions under the scheme.

This places the state ahead of Maharashtra, which contributes 12.75% with 15,187 internships, followed by Gujarat, which has 11,672 positions (9.80% of the national total).

Other states showing strong participation include Karnataka, which has provided 9,928 internships (8.33%), reflecting its robust industrial base and high youth engagement.

These states collectively represent a significant portion of the nationwide effort to equip young Indians with industry-ready skills.

Expansion of Internship Opportunities Across Sectors

The second round of the PMIS has expanded internship offerings across 735 districts, with participation from 327 reputed companies.

Internships now span diverse sectors, including:

  • Automobile
  • Travel and Hospitality
  • Banking and Finance
  • Manufacturing
  • Metals and Mining
  • Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)

This broad sectoral representation ensures that candidates from various educational backgrounds can access meaningful work experiences.

PM Internship Scheme: Challenges and Government Response

Despite the scheme’s early success, challenges remain.

The first round, which ran between October and December 2024, saw high attrition rates and low acceptance of offers.

Out of 1.27 lakh internship opportunities posted by 280 companies, only 8,725 candidates physically joined.

A parliamentary panel flagged several structural issues, including:

  • Mismatch of roles
  • Location constraints (relocation or long-distance travel)
  • Long internship tenure (12 months)

To address these concerns, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is working to refine the program, ensuring better alignment between industry needs and candidate expectations.
