Himachal Pradesh government has approved the recruitment of more than 2,600 youth in the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL).

The decision, announced on September 21, marks one of the largest hiring initiatives in the recent history of the state-owned utility.

The recruitment includes 1,602 Bijli Upbhogta Mitras and 1,000 Technical Mates (T-Mates), aimed at strengthening field operations and ensuring uninterrupted power supply across the state.

The government stated that the drive is part of a broader strategy to improve service delivery and create employment opportunities for local youth.

Himachal Pradesh Addressing Long-Standing Staff Shortages

HPSEBL currently has 4,009 sanctioned posts for T-Mates, but 3,049 of these remain vacant.

This shortfall has adversely affected the board’s ability to maintain infrastructure, respond to outages, and deliver consistent electricity services, especially in remote and disaster-prone areas.

To bridge this gap, the government will engage Bijli Upbhogta Mitras at the circle level through an authorized agency.

These roles are designed to support field operations, assist in maintenance, and improve consumer service delivery.

The recruitment of 1,000 additional T-Mates will further bolster the board’s technical capacity.

Eligibility and Application Details

Candidates applying for the Bijli Upbhogta Mitra and T-Mate positions must meet specific qualifications.

Applicants should have passed Matriculation and hold an ITI certificate in Electrical or Wireman trade from a recognized institution.

The age limit for applicants is set between 18 and 30 years.

The government emphasized that these roles are critical to HPSEBL’s functioning.

Field staff are considered the backbone of the organization, responsible for maintaining power lines, repairing damaged infrastructure, and restoring electricity during emergencies.

Dual Focus: Infrastructure and Employment

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reiterated the government’s commitment to both infrastructure development and employment generation.

“In the last two and a half years, 23,191 youth have been employed in the government sector alone. Going forward, new avenues of employment and self-employment will be created to benefit the youth of the state,” he said.

This recruitment drive aims to strengthen essential public services in Himachal Pradesh. It also addresses unemployment and promotes skill utilization among the state’s youth.

The government expects the initiative to improve service delivery, reduce power disruptions, and enhance disaster response mechanisms.
