TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech and Wipro come-up with a hiring plan amidst the COVID-19

  • TCS has decided to open up on the lateral hiring side and has started onboarding new associates into the TCS ecosystem, said Rajesh Gopinathan, CEO
  • Infosys hired more than 4,000 lateral hires in the quarter ended April 2020 and will hire more in the coming quarter as well, said UB Pravin Rao, COO.
  • HCL has (lateral) hired 2000 employees in the June quarter and will continue to hire based on need in coming quarters, said VV Apparao, CHRO, HCL Tech
  • Wipro has hired new 7,000 employees in the last three months, lateral hiring never stopped and we plan to keep on hiring, said Saurabh Govil, CHRO, Wipro.

TCS has lifted the freeze on lateral hiring, it had imposed in the last quarter of 2019-20 financial year and announced a recruitment plan for the next quarters. TCS plans to double its US campus placement numbers at 2,000, like last year, plans to hire 40,000 fresh candidates from campuses across the country and open up on the lateral hiring side. The company said it would selectively hire experienced employees from outside.

“We are looking forward to the demand environment, and (have) decided to selectively open up on lateral hiring, apart from onboarding new associates into the ecosystem,” said Rajesh Gopinathan, chief executive officer and managing director, TCS.

According to UB Pravin Rao, Infosys is in a process of coming out of the COVID hiring freeze. Infosys had temporarily suspended lateral hiring in April citing Covid-19 pandemic. The company has already hired more than 4,000 lateral hires and 18,000 freshers in the quarter that ended in April 2020.

Now it has come- up with a new hiring plan. Infosys has decided to onboard 20,000 freshers in FY21. In Q1, there were 4,000 plus lateral hiring and the trend will continue going forward based on the needs.

Prateek Agarwal, CFO, HCl Technologies said, “We hired 2,000 laterals and on-boarded 1,000 freshers in Q1 and will continue to hire in coming quarters based on need and also attrition.” Earlier in May 2020 the company had said that it will go slow on lateral hiring but will hire 15,000 freshers in FY21

According to Saurabh Govil, Group CHRO of Wipro Ltd, the company has on-boarded over 7,000 lateral hires for the quarter that ended in June 2020, claims that lateral hiring never stopped, growth is the agenda and will continue hiring in Q2 based on demand. He did not disclose any numbers for campus hiring.
