IBM to pause hiring, plans to replace 7,800 jobs with AI

IBM is planning to freeze the hiring for certain positions. The company expects that nearly 7,800 jobs could be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).

CEO Arvind Krishna has specified that hiring specifically in back-office functions such as human resources will be suspended or slowed. The company aspects that 30% of non-customer-facing roles could be replaced by AI and automation in five years.

Earlier, The CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman said AI has the potential to drastically change society but also has real dangers.

Sam Altman also believes that AI chatbots could “eliminate a lot of current jobs” but also has the potential to be “the greatest technology humanity has yet developed” to improve our lives.

There were earlier reports that suggested that the OpenAI chatbot responded with a list of jobs that it could potentially replace:

  • Paralegal
  • Bookkeeper
  • Translator
  • Copywriter
  • Market Research Analyst
  • Social Media Manager
  • Appointment Scheduler
  • Telemarketer
  • Virtual Assistant

  • News Reporter
  • Travel Agent
  • Tutor
  • Technical Support Analyst
  • Email Marketer
  • Content Moderator
  • Recruiter

Recently, IBM acquired, Red Hat will lay off nearly 4 per cent of its global workforce, or about 760 employees. The North Carolina-based software major Red Had currently has about 19,000 employees globally.

Earlier this year, IBM confirmed it planned to lay off around 3,900 employees from its global 260,000 workforce.

The IBM layoffs are a result of the spinoff of IT infrastructure services provider Kyndryl’s business and part of the AI unit called ‘Watson Health’.
