An Indian multinational steel-making company, Tata Steel has sacked 35 employees for breach of the ethical code according to TOI reports.

Tata Steel chairman N Chandrasekaran said, “The company has made significant acquisitions in the last few years and initiated a drive for an open culture.”

“Employee can express his or her concerns. It could be on sexual harassment or a practice they noticed at the company. We are encouraging people to record their grievances”, he added.

“A combination of these factors led to a higher number of complaints. We received 875 complaints last fiscal, and 158 were related to whistleblowers, 48 were regarding safety, and 669 on HR and other behavioural issues”, N Chandrasekaran added while addressing shareholders at Tata Steel’s annual general meeting.

According to the TOI report, the company has taken action against 38 people and 35 employees have been fired.

“As a company, we are a global benchmark, so we will continue to push the culture where we uphold the highest values and have a zero-tolerance policy,” N Chandrasekaran said.

The statement follows when at least 19 people were reportedly injured on June 13 after an explosion occurred at a blast furnace of Tata Steel’s hot rolled coil factory at Meramundali in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.

Earlier, The company said that it is working closely with relevant authorities on the ground and have initiated an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.

“Safety remains our top priority and we’re committed to learning from this incident. We will share updates as and when more details are available,” it further stated.

Recently, Chairman N Chandrasekaran said on June 29 that the IT and consulting company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has sacked six employees after finding them guilty of accepting favours from certain staffing firms in the appointment of contractual workers.

“We have sacked six employees and also banned six staffing companies,” he said in response to questions from shareholders.
