India’s tech talent landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. While metro cities have traditionally been the epicenter of tech employment, a reverse migration trend is reshaping the map.

Tier 2 and 3 cities are emerging as vibrant hubs for tech talent, driven by cost advantages, infrastructure improvements, and a surge in local opportunities. Let’s explore this exciting shift and its implications.

The Rise of Tier 2 and 3 Cities in Tech Employment

As tech employees returned to their hometowns during the Covid-19 pandemic, the battle for talent shifted. Tier 2 and smaller cities now hold a default advantage:

Lower Operational Costs: These cities offer cost arbitrage, making hiring 60-70% more cost-effective. Infrastructure is more viable and scalable.

Low Attrition Rates: With a stable workforce, companies experience reduced turnover, ensuring continuity and productivity.

According to TeamLease data, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Indore, and Bhubaneshwar have become tech talent powerhouses. Vizag, Coimbatore, and Kochi also comprise the list.

These cities collectively boast a tech talent strength of 490,000-540,000, contributing around 10% to India’s total talent pool.

Rising IT Hotspot: Jaipur, Indore, Kerala

Jaipur, with its rapid expansion of startups and tech companies, is solidifying its position as an IT hub.

The city’s ecosystem fosters innovation, attracting both local talent and entrepreneurs. Jaipur’s success story demonstrates that Tier 2 cities can compete on a global stage.

Indore is another city making waves in the tech world.

With four IT Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and a growing software export industry, Indore offers a conducive environment for tech professionals.

Its strategic location and supportive policies make it an attractive destination for both companies and talent.

Kerala’s IT parks are witnessing substantial export revenue growth. Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode are emerging as key players in the tech talent game.

Their focus on quality education, infrastructure, and work-life balance is paying off.

The future of tech talent lies beyond the metros, and these cities are proving that innovation knows no boundaries. As infrastructure continues to improve, we can expect even more Tier 2 and 3 cities to join the tech revolution.
