There are several social security programs under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The EPFO has shared relevant information regarding Principal Employers.

EPFO has shared a tweet from the official Twitter handle saying, “Principal Employers’ Functionality.”

The two-way mechanism for declaration of Principal Employers and Contractor Establishments:

  • Principal Employers registered with EPFO can be declared by the contractors.
  • Principal Employers not registered with EPFO can be declared by the contractors.
  • Contractor Establishments’ are allowed to declare particulars like contract tenure, contract/work order document, and UANs of the employees deployed.

After declaration, the Principal Employer can view compliances for UANs of employees deployed by contractors. To know more about Principal Employers click here.

The difference between employer and principal employer:

In a factory, the owner or occupier, or manager is considered a principal employer; but in an establishment or a company, the person who is in control and supervision of the establishment or company will be the principal employer. The principal employer is the one who employs contract labour through a contractor.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation earlier warned its members not to share critical details about their EPF account, personal information, or OTP over the phone or online.

EPFO earlier tweet mentioned, “Never asks for any money through WhatsApp or social media, etc.” for any service and also recommended members not to reply to calls or texts requesting personal information or sharing OTP since this could lead to fraud.

EPFO has announced this due to the growing threat of EPF-related OTP scams and other issues, also to minimize fraud. EPF members should not share personal information like their Aadhaar card number, PAN, bank account number, or UAN number with anybody on WhatsApp or social media, according to the EPFO advice, because they risk losing their money.

People can contact through its official website, www.epfindia.gov.in, with any questions, suspicious calls or messages, or other issues.
