Google layoff experience: Logged out at 11 pm, and received termination mail at 2 am

An American multinational technology company, recently Google laid off 453 employees from various departments in India. In January, Google parent Alphabet announced to sack 12,000 employees globally.

However, Google’s CEO took responsibility for the layoffs. Post the layoff announcement by the company employees have shared their experiences.

Vishal Arora was working with google as Head of Engineering, Platform Services, and Google Ads. He took on LinkedIn sharing lessons of his layoff story.

Sharing his story Vishal said that he wrapped up the last meeting with India on 19 January at 23:38 pm and at 02:04 Direct report in India sends a chat message, asking for some time to talk about “A difficult decision to set us up for the future”. This was the last chat message to come through.

He further shared that he received a Notice email titled “Notice regarding your employment” in his personal Gmail, received at 2:07 AM which he assumed was spam, and ignored.”

Vishal Arora shared the LinkedIn post saying, “This is my first LinkedIn post, so please be gentle :-)”

“A little over a week ago, I also became one of the 12,000 impacted by Google’s layoffs. Thank you to everyone that has since reached out to me. I cannot express enough gratitude for the outpouring of kind words, support and encouragement I’ve received since then. You’ve helped me stay strong and positive :-)”, the post added.

The post further said, “Googlers were what made my time at Google special: #thankyou. I am saddened to part ways with such amazing people. I’m disappointed in not being able to say farewell in person, or see much of our hard work through to fruition. Most of all, I’m surprised at how unexpected this was. And every unexpected outage deserves a blameless post-mortem, so here is mine, along with my lessons learned: https://lnkd.in/gjB7Yscc.”

“To those that call themselves Xooglers after the recent layoffs, I’d like to say that you’re not alone and that things will get better! To the Googlers still waiting to find out whether they’re part of the 12,000 impacted: hang in there!”, the post concluded.
