The deadline for filing the Income Tax Returns (ITR filing) expires today for taxpayers. If you haven’t filed your ITR for AY 2023-24 (FY 2022-23) yet, you must do it by the end of the day, July 31, 2023.

Income Tax has recently shared a Tweet through its official Twitter handle, “A new milestone! More than 6 crore ITRs have been filed so far (30th July), out of which about 26.76 lakh ITRs have been filed today till 6.30 pm! We have witnessed more than 1.30 crore successful logins on the e-filing portal till 6.30 pm, today.”

“To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & social media”, the tweet added.

The tweet further added, “We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2023-24, to file their ITR at the earliest to avoid last minute rush.”

The return can be filed by visiting the income website: http://www.incometax.gov.in. Income Tax India has recently shared a tweet through the official Twitter handle on linking PAN with Aadhaar.

The Income Tax India tweet said, “Dear Taxpayers, Concerns have been raised by certain NRIs/ OCIs regarding their PANs becoming inoperative, although they are exempted from linking their PAN with Aadhaar.”

“Further, PAN holders, whose PANs have been rendered inoperative due to non-linking of PAN with Aadhaar, have expressed concern over certain consequences of PAN becoming inoperative”, the tweet added.

In this context, the following clarifications may be noted:

1. ITD has mapped the residential status of NRIs in case they have filed the ITR in any of the last 3 AYs or they have intimated their residential status to the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO). The PANs have been rendered inoperative, in case any one of the above-mentioned criteria is not met.

The NRIs whose PANs are inoperative are requested to intimate their residential status to their respective JAO along with supporting documents with a request to update their residential status in the PAN database. Details of JAO can be found here.
