In the middle of a debate over Period leave / menstrual leave Co-Founder and CEO, of Chai Sutta Bar, Anubhav Dubey felt that it should be kept open.

Anubhav took to a LinkedIn post saying, “Giving leave for menstrual days was not a tough decision. I believe there are a few things that only women understand, and we, as men, only get to see and hear about them.”

“Around three months ago, we were incorporating “period leave” at Chai Sutta Bar, and when we introduced this to the female members of our team, we had different responses”, the post added.

The post further said, “Some of them said that they did not need any period leave, while others said that they needed this leave because they felt unbearable cramps. The discussion was very healthy, as everyone respected the different experiences faced by different women in the room.”

“I think every human body is not the same. There are some women whose bodies can bear this pain, and then there are these women who we have seen fainting because of the intensity of the pain. Both of them are justified. If we talk about the leave for this natural process in women, I feel it should be kept open. We have implemented this leave, understanding the importance of it for those who need it”, the post added.

How did the Period leave / menstrual leave debate evolve?

Recently, Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani was in objection to Menstruation leave she told in Rajya Sabha that it’s not a handicap, and there is no need for a ‘paid leave’ policy. “Menstrual leave could lead to discrimination against women in the workforce.” She added.

In reply to MP Manoj Kumar Jha’s question whether the government had taken any measures to make compulsory provisions for employers to grant a certain number of leaves to female employees.

Smriti Zubin Irani said, “As a menstruating woman, menstruation and the menstruation cycle is not a handicap, it’s a natural part of a woman’s life journey.”

“However, the issue of menstruation and its associated activities are surrounded by silence, often treated with shame and associated with social taboos that restrict mobility, freedom, and access to normal activities for menstruating persons, and many times leads to their harassment and social exclusion”, she added.
