Mamaearth co-founder Ghazal Alagh opted out of “celebrating Women’s Day,” declining over 30 speaking engagements on March 8.

In general, every organization worldwide celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8th to honor women’s achievements, raise awareness about gender equality, and advocate for women’s rights.

It’s a day to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political contributions of women and to highlight the ongoing struggle for gender parity and empowerment.

However, Mamaearth co-founder Ghazal Alagh shared a LinkedIn post explaining her insights over Women’s Day. The post read, “The facts of I declined to speak at 30+ events on women’s day this year.”

“It’s surprising how everyone suddenly wants to speak to you during these 3 days, making it irritating and posing unnecessary stress on you. Dare you to decline any, and they start forming views around you being high-nosed”, the post added.

Explaining her points this year, she highlighted:

Even though Women’s Day is celebrated each year, unfortunately, the only thing it makes a difference in is its yearly theme. What remains constant are:

  1. Assumptions about women’s personal lives or career choices.
  2. Constant societal pressures to conform to traditional roles.
  3. A 27% pay gap for and only 25.2% of women in the workforce.
  4. Lack of equal representation in leadership positions.

To celebrate women and their courage, then perhaps it’s time to do this instead:

  1. Encouraging equal opportunities for women in leadership roles.
  2. Investing in initiatives that empower women entrepreneurs.
  3. Educating the younger generation about gender equality.

“Women’s Day is not just about events, sweet boxes, and gift vouchers. It’s about taking meaningful actions that lead to change. Wishing a happy Women’s Day not just for this year, but for the years and centuries to come”, the post concluded.
