According to the Moneycontrol report, Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced the IndiaAI mission, allocating Rs 10,372 crore, aiming to develop indigenous AI models incorporating diverse languages and datasets.

Chandrasekhar, in Thiruvananthapuram, announced plans to create Indian foundational AI models, referencing ChatGPT. Through IndiaAI mission, leveraging local languages and datasets, they aim for sovereign AI models developed and built within India. This initiative seeks to establish indigenous AI capabilities tailored to the nation’s needs.

Chandrasekhar added that approximately Rs 2,000 crore will be allocated to support startups under the IndiaAI initiative, facilitating investments in young Indian-led ventures nationwide.

On March 7, the Union Cabinet endorsed the Rs 10,372-crore IndiaAI initiative, aiming to establish computing infrastructure, AI centers for multi-modal LLMs, and procure 10,000 graphics processing units, among other components.

A key aspect of the initiative is developing computing infrastructure accessible to AI startups and entrepreneurs. Minister Chandrasekhar highlighted the significance, stating, “AI computes or AI data centers are the fundamental backbone to training AI models.”

He said that Western countries with advanced AI capabilities benefit from such infrastructure. Thus, IndiaAI aims to construct AI computing infrastructure as part of bolstering the nation’s digital framework.

As part of the IndiaAI program, the government plans to introduce the India Datasets Platform, facilitating access to non-personal data for companies. Minister Chandrasekhar emphasized the importance of datasets, stating, “Datasets are the raw material for artificial intelligence.”

He highlighted the existing data protection law and outlined that the non-personal data collection platform will exclusively serve Indian startups and companies, excluding foreign entities.

This strategy aims to support indigenous AI development by providing local businesses with access to essential data resources while upholding data privacy and sovereignty principles.
