Swiggy, the Bengaluru-based food delivery giant, has announced the expansion of its 10-minute food delivery service, Bolt, to over 400 cities across India.

Initially launched in major metros like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune, Bolt is now available in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Indore, Coimbatore, and Kochi.

Swiggy Bolt: Expansion and Adoption

Bolt is designed to deliver freshly prepared food within 10 minutes.

The service focuses on dishes that can be prepared quickly without compromising on taste, freshness, or quality.

Swiggy has partnered with over 40,000 restaurants, including multinational chains like McDonald’s, Starbucks, and KFC, to ensure faster delivery of food items to customers within a 2 km radius of their outlets.

The expansion of Bolt comes at a time when startups are increasing their presence in the quick commerce space.

Cities from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have witnessed the highest adoption for Bolt, followed by Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Punjab.

The service is now active in emerging hubs such as Roorkee, Guntur, Warangal, Patna, Jagtial, Solan, Nashik, and Shillong.

Operational Efficiency and Market Competition

To ensure the safety of delivery partners, Swiggy has implemented certain measures.

Delivery partners are not informed of the distinction between Bolt and regular orders. Additionally, there is no incentive for fast delivery.

The delivery radius for Bolt is limited to 2 km, which increases familiarity and enables faster delivery.

Additionally, the speed of delivery is optimized by prioritizing delivery executives closest to Bolt outlets.

The expansion of Bolt is part of Swiggy’s strategy to compete with rival Zomato.

Zomato had experimented with 10-minute food delivery in 2022 but shut the pilot program and instead launched Zomato Everyday.

Zomato Everyday delivers meals prepared by home cooks from centralized kitchens in relatively shorter timelines.

Swiggy’s Bolt, on the other hand, focuses on quick delivery of freshly prepared food items.

Swiggy Financial Performance

Swiggy reported a gross order value (GOV) of Rs 6,808 crore in the quarter ended June 2024. This is an increase from Rs 5,959 crore in the same period last year.

The company had 14.03 million monthly transacting customers in the April-June period.

A research note by brokerage firm UBS Securities pointed out that GOV for Swiggy in food delivery grew at a slower rate than Zomato’s in the first quarter of fiscal 2025.

However, both companies are estimated to clock similar growth rates FY26 onwards.
