According to an internal memo sent to Twitter employees, the new management under Elon Musk has begun conducting layoffs Friday morning.

Twitter has fired the majority of its over 200 employees in India as part of mass layoffs across the globe ordered by its new owner Elon Musk who is looking to make his $44-billion acquisition work.

According to sources, the lay-offs in India were across segments such as policy, communication, engineering, and development.

The entire marketing and communications department in India has been sacked.

Recently, Twitter chief executive Parag Agrawal, chief financial officer Ned Segal, and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde were also terminated.

According to a PTI report, the layoffs have affected a “significant chunk” of the India team. However, the full details of the job cuts are not immediately available.

The company will temporarily close all offices for the safety of employees as well as Twitter systems and customer data. The company is reportedly laying off 3,738 people out of its total headcount of 7,500 across the globe.

Twitter’s emails to employees said, “Today is your last working day at the company, however, you will remain employed by Twitter and will receive compensation and benefits through your separation date of 2 February 2023.”

“During this time, you will be on a Non-working notice period and your access to Twitter systems will be deactivated.”

“Within a week, you will receive details of your severance offer, and financial resources extending beyond your non-working notice period”.

Employees Share the Goodbye Note

The mass layoffs were documented on Twitter itself. Many employees appeared to be together under the “#OneTeam” hashtag.

Rachit Uppal shared a tweet and said, “There have been different reactions by the employee post the layoffs. What a journey it has been…7 years…feels like an eternity … a big hug to Tweeps and partners who made it totally worthwhile…end of an era …Farewells need to be short and sweet.” #LoveWhereYouWorked#LoveWhoYouWorkedWith#OneTeam

Another employee Yash Agarwal also shared his experience, “Just got laid off. Bird App, it was an absolute honour, the greatest privilege ever to be a part of this team, this culture #LoveWhereYouWorked#LoveTwitter

Smita Mittal Gupta’s tweet said, “After 7+ years my Twitter chapter has come to an end. Twitter was so much more than a job, it felt like home, where coworkers became lifelong friends. The love and solidarity tonight is a true testament to the culture Tweeps have built over the years. It’s been an honor.”
