Google bans employees from using Zoom

Google is issuing a ban on the use of the Zoom teleconferencing platform for employees citing security concerns.

“Google emailed employees last week about the ban, telling workers who had the Zoom app installed on their Google-provided machines that the software would soon no longer function.”

According to Google spokesperson, Zoom‘s desktop client doesn’t meet the company’s security standards; employees can use Zoom through a web browser or mobile to stay in touch with family and friends.

For many, Zoom has served as a lifeline to connect with others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, a conferencing tool targeted for use by B2B companies, Zoom has made its mark outside of the office, becoming a common meeting place for Individuals, School Classes and Business Entities.

A spokesperson said to media, “We have long had a policy of not allowing employees to use unapproved apps for work that are outside of our corporate network,”

It’s worth noting that Google has a video conferencing app called Google Meet (previously known as Hangout Meet). The company can simply use that internally and avoid Zoom for the time being.
