Ministry of Labour & Employment has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting unorganised workers across India through a range of labour welfare schemes.

The Directorate General of Labour Welfare (DGLW) has successfully implemented these initiatives to support unorganised workers across India.

They have directly benefited over 50 lakh workers and their families, especially those employed in the Beedi, Cine, and Mining sectors.

Labour Welfare Organisation (LWO) operates under the Directorate General of Labour Welfare (DGLW) to oversee these schemes.

It ensures effective regional implementation through a network of 18 Welfare Commissioners.

The primary goal is to ensure social protection, healthcare services, and financial aid for education for unorganised workers.

These initiatives also provide housing support, benefiting many workers in remote and underserved regions.

Key Labour Welfare Schemes and Their Impact

The government has introduced several targeted welfare schemes to improve the quality of life and social security of unorganised sector workers.

These include:

  • Education Assistance Scheme: Provides annual scholarships ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹25,000 for the children of Beedi, Cine, and non-coal mine workers. The scheme is implemented through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and receives over one lakh applications annually. The Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system ensures transparent and timely disbursement of funds to eligible recipients.
  • Healthcare Support: The scheme provides outpatient services through a national network of dispensaries, ensuring accessible healthcare for workers. It also offers reimbursement for specialised treatments, covering critical illnesses like heart disease, kidney transplantation, cancer, tuberculosis, and minor surgeries. Financial assistance ranges from ₹30,000 for minor surgeries to ₹7.5 lakh for cancer treatment, ensuring access to life-saving healthcare for low-income workers.
  • Housing Assistance: The Revised Integrated Housing Scheme (RIHS), introduced in 2016, has now been merged with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). However, the Ministry continues to disburse pending installments to eligible beneficiaries, ensuring housing dignity for all.

Government’s Commitment to Inclusive Growth

The Ministry of Labour & Employment has highlighted these schemes as a fundamental pillar of the government’s labour welfare initiatives.

They reflect a commitment to inclusivity and compassion, ensuring better support for unorganised workers.

The initiatives align with the vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, ensuring that unorganised workers receive essential social security benefits.

Ministry of Labour & Employment is actively working to strengthen the welfare framework to enhance its reach and effectiveness.

It aims to make the system more accessible, technology-enabled, and outcome-focused in the coming years.
