YouTube sacks hundreds of employees amid restructuring process

An American online video-sharing and social media platform, YouTube has sacked hundreds of employees as part of the restructuring process.

A Google spokesperson said, “As we’ve said, we’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead.”

“To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities”, the spokesperson added.

A spokesperson further said, “Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally.”

YouTube-impacted employees have a chance to apply for other positions at the company. Recently, according to various media reports Google has sacked around 1,000 employees in a fresh round of layoffs.

As India Today said, On the layoffs the company said, “Due to changes in business needs, Google has decided to restructure operations at certain of its facilities, including at the facility (if any) at which you work. This restructuring is scheduled to start on January 10, 2024.”

Moreover, Meta, the parent company of Facebook has reportedly sacked 60 employees particularly those in Technical Program Manager (TPM) roles. 

So far in 2024 in just 18 days in January there have been 109 layoffs at tech companies with 18,404 people impacted (1,022 people per day).
