On January 15, 2025, the Ministry of Labour & Employment (MoLE), in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), hosted the “Conference on Future of Jobs” in New Delhi.
Themed “Shaping Tomorrow’s Workforce: Driving Growth in a Dynamic World,” the event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to discuss the evolving employment landscape and strategies for creating a future-ready workforce in India.
Future of Jobs Conference: Keynote Address
Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Hon’ble Minister of Labour and Employment & Youth Affairs and Sports, delivered the keynote address.
He emphasized the importance of synergizing education and employment through skill development.
Additionally, he stressed the need to foster innovation and prepare individuals for a rapidly changing job market.
Mansukh highlighted India’s potential to address global workforce shortages through initiatives like the Mutual Recognition of Skills and Standards.
Mansukh stressed that skill development must be at the core of efforts to create jobs and build a global talent hub.
He pointed out that skilling should go beyond certificates and focus on equipping individuals with practical expertise.
This approach is necessary to meet the dynamic demands of the industry and self-employment sectors.
By fostering strong industry-academia linkages, India can create a skilling model tailored to its unique needs.
Digital Proficiency and Inclusivity
Smt. Sumita Dawra, Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment, outlined three key focus areas for thriving in a rapidly evolving landscape: developing a digitally proficient workforce, building an inclusive workforce that values diversity, and integrating eco-friendly practices into workforce culture.
She emphasized that a skilled and adaptable workforce is crucial for attracting investments in key sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics.
Additionally, she noted the importance of having a workforce ready for green jobs. The conference featured insights from various sectors.
Mr. Vinod Sharma, Chairman, CII National Committee on Electronics Manufacturing, proposed a National Employment Policy and a Task Force on Future of Jobs to address industry challenges.
Key recommendations included developing a Universal Labour Management Information System (ULMIS) for efficient job matching.
Additionally, they suggested incentivizing companies offering upskilling programs and promoting earn-and-learn models to create an adaptable workforce.
Future of Jobs: India’s Position as a Global Capability Centre
India’s position as the “GCC Capital of the World” was highlighted, with 1,700 GCCs employing over two million people.
This number is projected to grow significantly by 2030.
These GCCs are adopting emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, robotic process automation, and digital commerce.
They are also integrating cybersecurity, blockchain, augmented reality, and virtual reality, showcasing India’s exceptional technological talent.
