As the festive season approaches, the e-commerce sector is gearing up for an impressive hiring spree.

According to a report by TeamLease Services, e-commerce companies are set to employ a staggering 10 lakh gig workers and 2.5 lakh contractual staff.

These numbers reflect the sector’s robust growth and its pivotal role in job creation.

The surge in hiring is directly linked to the anticipated sales boom during the festive season. E-commerce firms are projecting a remarkable 35% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

As consumers gear up for Diwali, Dussehra, and other celebrations, online shopping is expected to reach new heights. From fashion to electronics, home decor to gifts, e-commerce platforms are poised to witness a flurry of transactions.

This hiring boom underscores the e-commerce sector’s substantial contribution to India’s ambitious goal. This goal is to become a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025.

As the backbone of digital commerce, e-commerce not only drives sales but also fuels employment opportunities on a massive scale.

Roles in Demand

So, what roles are these gig workers and contractual staff stepping into?

Let’s break it down:

Delivery Personnel: There is a significant surge in online orders. Delivery personnel will be the unsung heroes ensuring timely deliveries to doorsteps across the country.

Warehouse Workers: Efficient warehousing and inventory management are critical for smooth operations. Warehouse staff play a pivotal role in handling logistics and ensuring products are ready for dispatch.

Customer Service Representatives: As customers seek assistance with orders, returns, and inquiries, customer service representatives will be the friendly voices on the other end of the chat or phone.

Packaging and Labeling: Attention to detail matters. These roles involve carefully packaging products, labeling them accurately, and ensuring they’re ready for shipment.

Quality Control and Order Fulfillment: Maintaining quality standards and ensuring that orders are fulfilled accurately are essential for customer satisfaction.

E-Commerce Sector: Inclusive Growth Across Cities

Projections indicate that e-commerce’s reach is expanding beyond metro cities. More than 60% of the demand for online shopping is expected to be driven by Tier II, III, and IV cities, along with rural India

This inclusive growth reflects the democratization of e-commerce, making it accessible to a wider audience.

TeamLease Services Senior VP and Business Head Balasubramanian A said in a statement “This festive season, e-commerce will drive sales and fuel job creation on a massive scale.”

He further states, “With 10 lakh gig workers and 2.5 lakh contractual staff to be employed, the e-commerce sector’s role in employment generation will be significantly impacted.”

“This hiring boom not only underlines the sector’s critical role in creating jobs but also its substantial contribution to India’s vision of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025,” said Balasubramanian.
