Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, has announced the creation of a new global business unit focused on artificial intelligence and services transformation.

The newly formed AI and Services Transformation Unit will be led by Amit Kapur, a TCS veteran with over 26 years of experience, who currently heads the company’s UK and Ireland operations.

Amit will assume his new role as Chief AI and Services Transformation Officer effective September 1, reporting directly to Aarthi Subramanian, Executive Director, President, and Chief Operating Officer of TCS.

This strategic move consolidates TCS’s existing AI and data teams under a single umbrella, aiming to scale impact, refresh service offerings, and accelerate delivery of AI-powered integrated technology services across operations, engineering, and modernization.

Objectives of the New Unit: Integration, Innovation, and Scale

The new unit will integrate all of TCS’s current AI capabilities and work closely with horizontal service units and industry business groups.

According to an internal memo from Aarthi, the unit is designed to “scale our impact in this area and enable benefit realisation at scale for our clients.”

It will focus on deepening domain-specific AI solutions, orchestrating new partnership ecosystems, and reinvigorating service propositions.

TCS also plans to reimagine its investments in global Pace Ports—innovation hubs that bring real-world AI experiences closer to clients.

These centers will play a key role in demonstrating AI applications across industries and fostering collaboration with technology partners.

Leadership Transition at TCS and Amit’s Track Record

Amit Kapur’s appointment marks a significant leadership transition.

He will step down from his current role overseeing the UK and Ireland market. Vinay Singhvi has been appointed as the new regional head for that geography.

Amit has held multiple leadership roles across various geographies during his tenure at TCS.

He is widely recognized for building high-performing teams and driving the company’s expansion across Europe.

Under his leadership, the UK and Ireland business became the company’s second-largest geography.

Aarthi praised Amit’s contributions, stating, “He has built lasting customer relationships and positioned us as a leader in the industry. I wish Amit all the very best in his new role”.

AI Push Amid Workforce Realignment

The announcement coincides with a period of major workforce restructuring at TCS.

The company plans to lay off around 12,000 employees globally, representing approximately 2% of its total workforce.

The company has denied that artificial intelligence is directly responsible for the recent layoffs.

However, the creation of the new unit reflects a clear shift toward AI-led transformation and technology-driven service delivery.

Industry analysts view the move as a necessary step for TCS to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Peter Bendor-Samuel, Founder of Everest Group, observed that TCS has historically taken a cautious approach to its AI strategy.

However, the company is now making decisive moves to keep pace with more aggressive competitors such as Accenture and Cognizant.
