A senior manager at the Bank of Baroda died by suicide on the bank’s premises late on July 17, 2025.

The deceased, identified as Shiv Shankar Mitra, 52, was serving as Chief Manager at the branch and had recently submitted his resignation citing health issues and excessive work pressure.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

According to police reports, Shiv asked all staff members to leave the branch after banking hours, stating he would close up for the day.

The security guard left around 9:30 PM.

Shiv had earlier requested a colleague to bring a rope, which was later used in the act. CCTV footage confirmed that he hanged himself around 10 PM inside the bank premises.

When Shiv failed to return home and did not respond to calls, his wife visited the branch around midnight.

Upon finding the lights on and receiving no response, she alerted other staff members. Shiv was found hanging when the branch was opened.

Bank of Baroda Employee Suicide Note and Resignation Details

A suicide note recovered from Shiv’s trouser pocket cited work pressure as the reason for his decision.

The note did not blame any individual but included a plea to the bank to avoid placing excessive burdens on its employees.

Shiv also apologized to his wife and daughter and requested that his eyes be donated.

He had submitted his resignation on July 11, 2025, citing health concerns and stress.

However, the bank had not yet relieved him from duty due to the mandatory 90-day notice period.

Police are investigating whether the delay in accepting his resignation contributed to his distress.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Baramati City Police have filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and launched a formal investigation.

Inspector Vilas Nale confirmed that Shiv’s resignation letter and suicide note have been recovered.

No foul play is suspected at this stage, but authorities are examining whether any additional pressure was exerted on Mitra during his notice period.

The body was sent for postmortem, and police are reviewing CCTV footage and internal communications to determine the full context of the incident.

Bank of Baroda Employee Suicide: Broader Implications for Banking Sector

Shiv’s death has sparked renewed debate about the mental health challenges faced by banking professionals, particularly those in senior roles.

The incident occurred just days before the branch was scheduled to celebrate Bank of Baroda’s 118th foundation day, which may have added to the workload.

Experts have pointed to the increasing number of workplace-related suicides in high-pressure jobs.

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Maharashtra consistently records one of the highest suicide rates in India.

Shiv’s case underscores the urgent need for mental health support and structural reforms in India’s corporate and financial sectors.
