Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has recorded its highest-ever net addition of formal jobs in June 2025, with 21.89 lakh members added to its payroll.

This marks the strongest monthly growth since EPFO began publishing payroll data in April 2018, signaling a robust expansion in India’s formal workforce.

According to provisional data released by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the June figure reflects a 9.14% increase over May 2025 and a 13.46% rise compared to June 2024.

The surge is attributed to growing employment opportunities, increased awareness of social security benefits, and EPFO’s targeted outreach initiatives.

Youth Lead Formal Workforce Entry

A significant portion of the new additions came from the 18–25 age group, which contributed 6.39 lakh new subscribers—accounting for over 60% of total enrolments in June.

This segment saw a 14.08% increase over May and a 12.15% year-on-year rise, indicating a steady influx of first-time job seekers into the organised sector.

Net payroll additions for this age group reached approximately 9.72 lakh, reinforcing the trend that young workers continue to dominate formal employment growth.

EPFO Rejoining Members and Job Mobility

EPFO also reported a sharp increase in members who rejoined after previously exiting the system.

Around 16.93 lakh individuals re-entered the EPFO fold in June, marking a 5.09% increase over May and a 19.65% jump from June 2024.

These members had typically changed jobs and chose to transfer their provident fund balances instead of withdrawing them.

This behavior reflects increasing confidence in long-term financial security and sustained access to social protection.

Rise in Female Workforce Participation

Female participation in the formal workforce showed notable momentum. EPFO added 3.02 lakh new female subscribers in June, a 14.92% increase over May.

Net female payroll additions stood at 4.72 lakh, reflecting a 10.29% year-on-year growth.

The rise in female participation signals a broader shift toward gender inclusivity in formal employment.

This trend is being reinforced by targeted policy efforts and changing workplace norms.

EPFO State-Wise and Sectoral Contributions

Maharashtra led the state-wise tally, contributing 20% of the total net payroll additions.

Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana were among the leading contributors to EPFO’s June additions.

Together, these states accounted for 61.5% of the total net payroll growth during the month.

On an industry basis, sectors such as education, construction, engineering, trading, finance, and expert services showed strong growth.

The expert services category, which includes manpower suppliers, contractors, and security services, accounted for 42.1% of total net additions in June.

Within this category, manpower suppliers alone contributed nearly half of the growth.
