Microsoft 50th anniversary celebration, held at its Redmond, Washington headquarters, took an unexpected turn when Vaniya Agrawal, an Indian-American software engineer, publicly confronted the company’s top executives.

Vaniya accused Microsoft of complicity in alleged war crimes in Gaza, citing the company’s reported contracts with the Israeli military.

The incident, which occurred during a Q&A session featuring CEO Satya Nadella and former CEOs Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, has sparked widespread discussion about corporate ethics and employee activism.

Following the event, Microsoft terminated Vaniya’s employment, citing acts of misconduct.

The Incident: A Bold Protest Against Microsoft

During the celebratory event, Vaniya interrupted the panel discussion, addressing Nadella, Gates, and Ballmer directly.

She accused Microsoft of enabling violence in Gaza through its technologies, stating, “Fifty thousand Palestinians in Gaza have been murdered with Microsoft technology. How dare you. Shame on all of you for celebrating on their blood. Cut ties with Israel.”

Her remarks were met with mixed reactions from the audience, with some employees booing as she was escorted out by security.

Vaniya’s protest was part of a broader movement within Microsoft, with employees affiliated with the group “No Azure for Apartheid” voicing opposition to the company’s alleged $133 million contract with Israel’s Ministry of Defense.

The group has been vocal about Microsoft’s Azure and AI technologies being used for state surveillance and military operations.

Microsoft’s Response and Termination

Following the incident, Microsoft informed Vaniya that her resignation, initially planned for April 11, would be effective immediately.

The company cited her actions during the event as the reason for her termination.

Another employee, Ibtihal Aboussad, who also protested during the event, was similarly dismissed. Microsoft described the protests as “hostile, unprovoked, and highly inappropriate.”

The company has not publicly commented on the specific allegations raised by Vaniya but has emphasized its commitment to ethical AI practices and corporate responsibility.

Who is Vaniya Agrawal, Indian Employee at Microsoft?

Vaniya Agrawal is a software engineer who joined Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence division in 2023.

Based in Seattle, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Software Engineering from Arizona State University, where she graduated summa cum laude.

Before joining Microsoft, Vaniya worked at Amazon as a Software Development Engineer for over three years.

Vaniya’s career trajectory includes diverse roles, from being a pharmacy technician to running a small business on Etsy.

Her professional journey reflects a blend of technical expertise and entrepreneurial spirit.

Despite her relatively short tenure at Microsoft, Vaniya’s actions have brought significant attention to employee activism within the tech industry.
