Ph.D. ‘shameful’ job listing is offering Rs 8,000 as a salary

The Delhi-based South Asian University is offering a salary of Rs 8,000/month for the position of a part-time research assistant for a Ph.D.

The job details are as below

The project seeks to examine how India may have shaped the policies and practices of the United Nations Security Council, especially during its tenure(s) as a non-permanent member of the Council. It further aims to explore the scope of India’s future engagement with the Security Council.

Two part-time Research Assistants will be appointed to assist with the literature review (including official documents of the United Nations and the Government of India), interview transcription, and content analysis.

They will also assist in the organization of a seminar, tentatively scheduled to take place in January-February 2024, to share preliminary research findings. Depending on their proficiency, Research Assistants will be invited to co-author research articles/policy briefs/op-eds that come out of the Project.

Essential: Ph.D./MPhil/Postgraduate in International Relations or a related discipline with minimum 55% marks; demonstrated interest in the study of international organizations and/or India’s engagement with the United Nations. The opening has been facing a backlash on Twitter as monthly pay is remarkably low even for a part-time position. The salary range has asked questions “Degree and salary should not it compatible.”

Abdul Kalam Azad, a Twitter user shared the tweet, “Salary: 8000 rupees per month Qualification: PhD/MPhil/MA What a shame! https://twitter.com/southasianuni/status/1661246424573460480.”

Another Twitter user said, “Part-time research assistant salary 8000/month? Seriously? Why does @SouthAsianUni university think that it would be able to produce excellent work on this important topic?”

Another Twitter user said, “I hope the Indian working class stops accepting laughable compensations like these and starts demanding better pay, instead of falling for the scarcity race that institutions like yours love to exploit.”
