TCS CEO Confirms Shift Toward Local Hiring in the US

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, is recalibrating its hiring strategy in the United States by significantly reducing its reliance on H-1B visa holders.

CEO K Krithivasan confirmed that the company has deployed fewer than the approved number of H-1B staff this financial year and will not pursue new H-1B hires in the near term.

The move signals a broader shift toward strengthening its local workforce in the US amid evolving business priorities and regulatory considerations.

Strategic Shift in Talent Deployment at TCS

In an interview with The Times of India, Krithivasan stated that only about 500 employees have traveled to the US on H-1B visas this financial year, despite the company having approvals for a larger number.

This marks a deliberate reduction in visa-based staffing, reflecting TCS’s intent to build a more locally rooted talent base in its key global markets.

“We are deploying fewer than the approved number of H-1B staff,” Krithivasan said.

“Our focus is on hiring locally in the US to meet client expectations and align with long-term strategic goals.”

Reasons Behind the Hiring Strategy

Several factors have influenced TCS’s decision to prioritize local hiring:

  • Client preferences: Many US-based clients now prefer teams that are locally available and culturally aligned, especially for roles involving direct customer interaction and agile development.
  • Regulatory environment: The US government has tightened scrutiny around visa programs, prompting companies to reduce dependency on foreign workers.
  • Talent availability: TCS has invested in training and upskilling local talent, making it more feasible to meet project demands without relying heavily on overseas staff.

This approach also helps mitigate risks associated with visa delays and policy changes, ensuring smoother project execution and compliance.
