Coal India Ltd. (CIL), the country’s largest coal producer, has announced the implementation of a uniform dress code for its 2.25 lakh employees, effective July 2025.

The decision, approved by the CIL board on May 30, 2025, aims to enhance workplace uniformity, reinforce corporate identity, and improve employee presentation.

Details of the New Dress Code

Under the new scheme, employees will be required to wear standardized uniforms across all CIL offices and subsidiaries.

The prescribed attire includes:

  • Male employees: Navy blue trousers paired with sky blue shirts.
  • Female employees: Two options—light sky blue kurtas with dark navy blue salwars and dupattas, or light sky blue sarees with dark navy blue borders and matching blouses.

Each employee will receive an advance of ₹12,500 to purchase three pairs of uniforms, ensuring compliance with the new policy.

Objectives Behind the Dress Code Implementation

The introduction of a uniform dress code is aimed at achieving several key objectives:

  • Enhancing workplace uniformity across CIL’s vast workforce.
  • Reinforcing corporate branding through consistent employee appearance.
  • Improving professional presentation in public-sector operations.
  • Fostering a sense of belonging and discipline among employees.

Review and Future Adjustments

CIL will review the uniform dress code scheme after one year, assessing its effectiveness and making necessary adjustments based on employee feedback and operational requirements.

Coal India Limited’s Workforce and Production Challenges

Coal India Ltd. accounts for over 80% of domestic coal production.

However, the company has faced production declines, with output dropping 1.4% to 63.5 million tonnes last month compared to 64.4 million tonnes in the same period last year.

Despite these challenges, CIL remains focused on workforce management and operational efficiency, with the new dress code policy being part of broader efforts to streamline corporate identity and employee engagement.
