Mozilla & BlackBerry to collectively layoff 260 employees. Mozilla Corp, the developer of the web browser Firefox, is implementing a reorganization resulting in approximately 60 job cuts.

“We’re scaling back investment in some product areas to focus on areas that we feel have the greatest chance of success,” Mozilla said in a statement.

“We intend to re-prioritize resources against products like Firefox Mobile, where there’s a significant opportunity to grow and establish a better model for the industry”, the statement added.

Approximately 5% of Mozilla’s workforce will be affected by the recent announcement, primarily within their product development organization. The company has informed its employees about this decision.

BlackBerry will reduce the annual cost run rate by approximately $50 million. These actions were largely focused on the Cybersecurity business and included approximately 200 headcount reductions.

The company is taking further actions to streamline its cost structure.  Within the Cybersecurity business, additional headcount reductions are expected to generate annualized savings of approximately $27 million and non-headcount actions an incremental $8 million.

The efficiencies have been identified in all functions, but in particular within the cost of goods sold and research and development.

BlackBerry has exited 6 of its 36 global office locations, including San Ramon, California, which are expected to realize annualized savings of approximately $7 million.  Other reductions in force are expected to realize annualized savings of approximately $13 million.

So far in 2024, there have been 269 layoffs at tech companies with 51,065 people impacted (1,135 people per day). In 2023, there were 2,001 layoffs at tech companies 428,836 people impacted (1,175 people per day).
