Ministry of Labour Reviews Future Plans: Focus on Informal Sector

The Ministry of Labour & Employment, under the leadership of Secretary Sumita Dawra, has announced a series of initiatives aimed at boosting the informal sector and enhancing workplace safety.

These plans were discussed during a senior officers meeting held in hybrid mode. It was attended by senior officers of the Ministry and heads of organizations under its purview.

Ministry of Labour: Future of Work

In December 2024, organizers will hold a National Conference to boost the informal sector.

The organizers are hosting the conference in New Delhi, focusing on the theme of the “Future of Work”.

This high-profile event aims to bring together prominent industry leaders, academic scholars, and representatives from labour organizations to discuss the transformative impact of technology on the Indian labour market.

Sumita said, “The conference will offer important insights into the future of work trends and assist in shaping policies that support fair and sustainable growth of the Indian workforce”.

In January 2025, the Ministry, in association with the International Social Security Association (ISSA), will organize a Regional Seminar on January 20-21 in New Delhi.

The seminar is titled “Formalization and Social Security Coverage for Workers in the Informal Sector: Challenges and Innovations.”

It will focus on social security of workers, sharing of national and international experiences and practices.

The seminar willl also cover role of emerging technology.

Sumita said, “This seminar will be an opportunity to showcase India’s best practices with respect to social security..”

She added, “.. including digital solutions to social protection such as e-Shram and the National Career Portal (NCS).”

Webinar on Workplace Safety and ELI Scheme Launch

Addressing the concern for the safety of workers at the workplace, the Ministry will conduct a webinar to sensitize stakeholders.

The VV Giri National Labour Institute (VVGNLI) has collaborated with the Ministry to organize the webinar.

The aim is to raise awareness about workplace safety measures and practices.

Sumita Dawra emphasized “Ensuring the safety of our workers is a top priority, and this webinar will help us achieve that goal.”

The Ministry is also preparing to launch the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme.

This scheme aims to provide incentives to employers for creating more employment opportunities.

Sumita Dawra said, “The ELI Scheme is a step towards formalizing the informal sector and providing social security coverage to workers.”
