ON PURPOSE, a creative consultancy specializing in social change communications, has taken a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive workplace by introducing a new menopause leave policy.

This policy, launched on World Menopause Day, allows employees to take up to six days of paid leave per year to manage menopause-related symptoms.

This initiative aims to address one of the most overlooked challenges in the workplace and sets a new standard for employee well-being and inclusivity.

ON Purpose: Key Features of the Menopause Leave Policy

Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life, typically occurring around the age of 46 in India, which is earlier than the global average of 51.

Despite its prevalence, menopause remains a largely unaddressed issue in many workplaces, leading to significant discomfort and productivity loss for those affected.

ON PURPOSE’s new policy is a proactive measure to support employees experiencing menopause, ensuring they have the necessary flexibility and understanding to manage their symptoms effectively.

The menopause leave policy introduced by ON PURPOSE includes several key features designed to support employees:

Paid Leave: Employees are entitled to up to six days of paid leave per year, which can be used as needed throughout the year.

Flexible Working Arrangements: Employees can request flexible hours or remote work options to manage symptoms such as insomnia, low energy, and mood changes.

Educational Sessions: ON PURPOSE will host educational and awareness sessions to destigmatize menopause and encourage a supportive and understanding environment.

A Commitment to Inclusivity

Girish Balachandran, the founder and managing director of ON PURPOSE, emphasized the importance of creating a supportive, stigma-free environment for all employees.

Girish said, “By introducing our Menopause Leave Policy, we’re taking another step towards creating a supportive, stigma-free environment for all employees.

“Open dialogue and flexibility are at the heart of this policy. We want you to know you’re not alone,” he added.

“We hope to encourage other organizations to follow our lead in addressing these critical and often overlooked issues,” Girish stated.

The company has previously implemented the ‘Period Chutti’ policy, which provides menstrual leave, and has signed the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) to promote gender equality in the workplace.

Dr. Nalini Kaushik, founder of BleedEqual, an advocacy organization for menstrual health awareness and gender equality, highlighted the significance of the new policy.

Nalini said, “The launch of this policy is a significant step towards recognizing and addressing the challenges many women face during menopause.”

She added, “Our survey at ON PURPOSE showed a strong interest in a menopause policy, but relatively low self-assessed knowledge of menopause, underscoring the need for more education and awareness initiatives”.
